Report claims a “complete conservative dominance” of radio talk
June 22nd, 2007
A report out by a pair of liberal groups says 91% of the total weekday talk programming on the 257 news/talk stations owned by the top five radio
groups is conservative while just 9% is progressive. The right-lean is less in the top ten markets where the split is 76% to 24%. The groups say the most conservative talk markets are Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
Researchers focus on the five biggest radio groups — Clear Channel, CBS, Citadel, Cumulus and Salem. Their report indicates Clear Channel broadcasts the most hours of progressive talk a day — about 14% of its talk programming. But it’s CBS that airs the biggest portion with 26%. They claim Citadel, Cumulus and Salem air 99% conservative talk.
The study says stations owned by women, minorities or independents are less inclined to be right-leaning. So the groups are pushing for changes in the FCC’s media ownership rules to limit a company from owning more than 10% of the stations in a market. Center for American Progress fellow Mark Woodhull insists “We are not calling for a return to the fairness doctrine.”
